AMTA Midwestern Member Wins Kansas Awards for Arts & Disabilities

April 21, 2008
Accessible Arts, Inc. (AAI), and the Kansas State Board of Education (KSBE), are proud to announce the recipients of awards in arts and disabilities for 2007. The awards were presented during a ceremony at the KSBE meeting, Wednesday, March 12th at the Kansas State School for the Blind (KSSB), 1100 State Avenue, Kansas City, Kansas.

The 2007 Educator of the Year in Arts & Disabilities will be Tonya Wahl who is a music therapist with the Wyandotte Comprehensive Special Education Cooperative, serving students with special needs in Wyandotte County. Wahl has a Masters Degree in Music Education, with a major in Music Therapy, from the University of Kansas. She often collaborates with teachers and other therapists in order to provide the best service possible for her students. This collaboration allows her to make personalized music therapy folders and CDs for students; teach school staff basic music therapy techniques to utilize throughout the week; work with music educators to provide success for students with special needs; and gives her the opportunity to give presentations about music therapy. For several years, Tonya and a co-worker have been developing various user-friendly assessment strategies to improve the process for evaluating students' need for music therapy services. As the music director of her church, she includes individuals with special needs into the worship team. Wahl also gives private music lessons to children, with and without special needs. She was nominated by Mary Ventura, Special Education Coordinator and by Vicki Tucker, Music Therapist, both with the Wyadotte Comprehensive Special Education Cooperative.

Lack of Updates Update

September 28, 2007
In case you had not noticed, there has been a definite lack in updates to the AMTA Midwestern website lately. The contact email - updates@amta-midwestern.org - has not been working for an unknown period of time, and I have been unable to access anything at that address nor repair whatever error there might be with it. In the mean time, I have set up another (working) address at maintain@amta-midwestern.org that you may use to send in your information. My sincere apologies for missing anything, vital or otherwise!
